Happy 100th Birthday, Joyce!

In February our lovely resident Joyce celebrated her 100^th birthday with afternoon tea organised by our kitchen team, which she shared with her loved ones. Much like many of our centenarians, Joyce was delighted to receive her customary birthday card from His Majesty the King, which she had been eagerly anticipating.

Joyce was born in 1924 and spent her childhood in Dumfries before being evacuated to Ayton. Joyce then studied Domestic Science at Glasgow and West of Scotland College and went on to teach the subject in school before meeting her future husband Jack in 1954 through a marriage bureau. The pair got married the same year and travelled for Jack’s work, leading to them living in a variety of different places, including Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. 

For the remainder of their married life, Joyce and Jack lived in Edinburg with their children Jamie and Morag, with Joyce teaching part-time and Jack working as a chartered accountant. 

At 100, Joyce is no longer looking for any big adventures and would instead prefer to go on a good walk, knit, complete jigsaw puzzles and read. When asked the secret to reaching 100, Joyce said, “visit as many countries as possible” and “keep going – use it or lose it!”.
