At Porthaven, we understand that multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms can be changeable and so the care we offer at each of our care homes is flexible and adapted to each residents specific needs.
What is MS and how can we help?
MS is a neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. MS is a lifelong condition which comes with a wide range of symptoms, but most people only experience a small number of these. Some of the more advanced symptoms of MS can include tremor, speech problems, cognitive changes, pain and problems with mobility making everyday tasks more difficult.
This is where Porthaven can help. We understand that MS is unpredictable and that the care needs of those living with MS will fluctuate day to day. Our nurses and carers provide tailored support for each resident we care for, and they receive training to ensure they are fully equipped to help our residents with the management of their symptoms.
Many people live independently with MS, or with at home carer support but sometimes, whether due to changes in the condition or carer holidays, other arrangements may need to be made. At all Porthaven care homes, we have the ability to provide short term respite and holiday stays to help those needing support at these times.
All Porthaven homes have numerous features to help deal with the progressive nature of MS but the overriding ethos of Porthaven is to maintain warm, homely and non-institutional environments. Every resident living with MS is able to relax in his or her own spacious private bedroom and wetroom, or participate in as many of the social activities a Porthaven home has to offer as each resident wishes to.
It’s not just the surroundings which make a huge difference to caring for people living with MS. Our chefs are trained to produce fresh, home cooked, nutritious meals which encourage our residents to eat and participate in the very social activity of enjoying food and our activities and wellbeing coordinators and care staff are all trained to provide stimulating individual and group activities. When excellent care combines with good nutrition, physical and mental stimulation, well-being and contentment are promoted, and that is what we wish to achieve for each and every Porthaven resident.

The staff have welcomed her and been exceptionally kind and caring. My mother has described them as ‘loving’. We could not have asked for a better environment or service.”
