What is palliative care and how can we help?

Palliative care, or end of life care, is a multidisciplinary approach to caring for those with a terminal illness. It focuses on providing residents with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness whatever their diagnosis.

At Porthaven, our carers and nurses receive training in how to care for and support residents who are approaching the end of life, supporting both medical and emotional care needs.

Through personalised care planning, involving the resident and their family, we can tailor a package of care to ensure we attend to the express needs and wishes of each resident, whilst delivering skilled care with the utmost dignity and respect.

All Porthaven homes have numerous features to help deal with any physical or nursing requirements of end of life care, but the overriding ethos of Porthaven is to maintain warm, homely and non-institutional environments. Every resident receiving palliative care is able to relax in his or her own spacious private bedroom and en suite wetroom, or participate in as many of the social activities a Porthaven home has to offer as each resident chooses.

It’s not just the surroundings which make a huge difference to caring for people living with MS. Our chefs are trained to produce fresh, home cooked, nutritious meals which encourage our residents to eat and participate in the very social activity of enjoying food; our activities and wellbeing coordinators and care staff are all trained to provide stimulating individual and group activities. When excellent care combines with good nutrition, physical and mental stimulation, well-being and contentment are promoted, and that is what we wish to achieve for each and every Porthaven resident.
