A Hero’s Welcome for Invictus Games Champion

Steve Sebburn, a former soldier and an Invictus Games gold and bronze medallist paid Bourne Wood Manor a visit on Thursday 18th July to tell us tales of his military career and his successes at the international games.

Speaking in front of residents, staff and invited guests from the local community, Steve talked about how his military ambitions were dashed following a freak accident whilst jumping out of a helicopter during a training exercise. The accident meant his dream of being deployed to Afghanistan was over and he faced a long process of recovery as a result of the back and brain injuries he sustained.

Fast forward three years and following plenty of training and much determination, Steve found himself on the United Kingdom’s team at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. The following year, Steve went to the Invictus Games in Sydney where he was victorious in the men’s road cycling time trial winning the gold medal. Later that day, he took home the bronze in the men’s road cycling criterium.

Residents and guests alike were astounded by Steve’s perseverance in the face of adversity and we all went away inspired by his determination to serve his country once again in the sporting arena.
