Our resident Captain David L Smith was very fortunate to meet both The Queen and the then Prince Charles when they visited the Shell Centre in London during the mid-1990s.
Captain Smith was a Shell tanker captain and worked for Shell for his whole working life from 1955 when he started as an officer apprentice. Captain Smith worked his way up through the class of over 300 cadets in 1957 before becoming Captain of the Donacilla in the 1970s.
He remembers the day very fondly and said it was a huge privilege to be able to show The Queen around. In the picture, Captain Smith is asking The Queen whether she would like to try the brand-new simulator, to which she politely smiled and declined.
